2004 First Steam Locomotive £2 Silver Proof

In 1804 Richard Trevithick revolutionised steam power by devising the first steam-driven locomotive engine. 200 years on, this innovation was commemorated with a Two Pound silver proof coin from The Royal Mint. This 2004 coin features a reverse by Robert Lowe, showing Trevithick’s’ locomotive Penydarren, sitting in a frame of a cogwheel, representing the Industrial Revolution which the new technology kick started. On the obverse is Ian Rank-Broadley’s regal portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This coin is from a limited issue of 10,233, struck to proof standard in 12.00 grams of .925 sterling silver. It’s offered in its original packaging from The Royal Mint which includes a certificate of authenticity.
