Guinea Anniversary £2 2013 – Circulated Coin

The Guinea Anniversary £2 2013 celebrates over 200 years since the last guinea was struck. This commemorative coin pays tribute to one of Britain’s principal gold coins that was associated with gentlemen, gentility and good taste for centuries.

Design Features

Sculptor Anthony Smith recreated one of the most famous guinea designs for this £2 coin – the Spade Guinea featuring a shield with the arms of George III. This design was nicknamed for its shield shape resembling a garden tool and became hugely popular among country gentry.

The coin’s edge inscription reads “WHAT IS A GUINEA? ‘TIS A SPLENDID THING” – a tribute from contemporary writer Stephen Kemble. This marks the first time one historic British coin has been celebrated with another commemorative issue.

Circulation Condition

As a circulated coin, this piece has been in public circulation and will show signs of normal wear and handling consistent with its age and circulation history. These marks are part of the coin’s character and history. The condition is typical for a circulated example of this issue.
