The 1993 Queen Elizabeth II 40th Anniversary Coronation £5 commemorates four decades since Her Majesty’s coronation at Westminster Abbey on June 2, 1953. This Brilliant Uncirculated Five Pound coin was issued by The Royal Mint to celebrate this significant royal milestone.

Both the obverse and reverse of this commemorative coin were designed by Robert Elderton. The obverse features Mary Gillick’s original portrait of The Queen that appeared on British coinage from 1953 to 1970. Surrounding this classic effigy are eight trumpeters on horseback, separated by swords and sceptres from the Royal Regalia.

The reverse design showcases St Edward’s Crown encircled by forty trumpets, symbolizing the fanfare that greeted Her Majesty upon her arrival at Westminster Abbey. This crown was the third worn by The Queen during her coronation day, following the George IV State Diadem during the procession and preceding the Imperial State Crown for state occasions. The inscription “FAITH AND TRUTH I WILL BEAR UNTO YOU · 1953-1993” encircles the design, echoing the text from the original 1953 coronation commemorative coin.

This cupro-nickel Five Pound coin weighs 28.28 grams and features a superior finish compared to standard circulation coins, making it an ideal collector’s piece that allows full appreciation of its detailed designs. The coin comes in its original Royal Mint presentation sleeve with additional information about the coronation and the three previous effigies of The Queen that have appeared on British coinage since 1953.
