The 2015 Alderney Salvation Army £5 BU Coin was issued by the States of Alderney in 2015 to commemorate the Salvation Army’s 150th anniversary. The coin was part of a series of commemorative coins that marked significant milestones in humanitarian and charitable history.

Key Features:

  1. Obverse Design:

    • The obverse of the coin features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the fifth definitive portrait of the Queen, designed by Jody Clark, which was introduced in 2015. It shows the Queen in her crown and gown, facing right, and is the most recent effigy used on UK and Commonwealth coins.

  2. Reverse Design:

    • The reverse of the coin was designed by John Bergdahl and features a powerful and symbolic design to honor the Salvation Army.

    • The design incorporates the Salvation Army crest (which includes a red shield with a white Salvation Army star) and the traditional image of a Salvation Army officer in uniform, along with a stylized depiction of a kettle and bell—symbols associated with the Salvation Army’s famous Christmas charity collections.

    • The inscription on the reverse reads: “SALVATION ARMY 150 YEARS” and includes the year 2015.

  3. Metal Composition:

    • The coin is struck in cupro-nickel, a standard material used for many commemorative coins. Cupro-nickel provides durability while allowing for intricate detailing in the design.

  4. Weight and Size:

    • The coin weighs 28.28 grams and has a diameter of 38.61 mm, which is typical for the £5 denomination.

  5. Mintage:

    • This coin was released in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition, which means it was struck to a high standard without being circulated. The mintage of this coin is limited, as it was issued in celebration of the Salvation Army’s milestone anniversary.

  6. Packaging:

    • The coin was issued in a presentation folder designed for collectors, featuring information about the design and the history of the Salvation Army, as well as the significance of the 150th anniversary.
