With traces back as far as the reigns of King Alfred the Great and King Henry VIII, the Royal Navy is intrinsically linked to the history of the United Kingdom. Since the Battle of Trafalgar and the Napoleonic Wars, the British Navy had practically ‘ruled the waves’ and was called on with confidence to defend Britain during the First World War. The Royal Navy faced several losses at the hands of the German Navy, most notably at Scarborough and at the hands of the infamous German U-Boats. The British Navy’s biggest role was less visible or decisive; the blockade of Germany limited the resources and supplies getting to the country’s war effort and effectively strangled the economy. As part of a series of events and pieces to commemorate 100 years since the First World War, The Royal Mint released several series of Two Pound coins, including this silver proof design to celebrate the role of the Royal Navy. Designed by David Rowlands, a notable military artist, this coin features a dreadnought ship at sea, the water choppy and birds and a seaplane flying overhead. There is a sense of movement to the entire scene. Around the edge is an inscription which reads ‘THE SURE SHIELD OF BRITAIN’ in a fitting reminder of the role the Navy played in Britain’s defence. This edition is struck in 12.00 grams of .925 sterling silver while the outer edge is plated in fine gold. The coin has a 28.40 millimetre diameter, comparable to circulating £2s and comes in its original presentation case with numbered certificate of authenticity. It is one of 3,030 in this format.
