2005 St Paul’s Cathedral End Of The First World War Two Pound Piedfort Silver Proof Coin

his Piedfort Two Pound silver proof coin, struck in 2005 commemorates sixty years since the end of the Second World War. The War in Europe formally ended on 8 May 1945 while the war in the east was declared later the same year on 15 August. For this commemorative coin, Robert Elderton has designed an impactful reverse featuring St Paul’s – an instantly recognisable symbol of London – illuminated by search lights. The cathedral survived the Blitz with only minor damage, doing much for morale in the capital. The search lights create a V shape which is synonymous with the end of the war, Victory, and Winston Churchill. This moving motif is joined on the obverse by the fourth effigy of Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. The edge inscription reads ‘IN VICTORY MAGNANIMITY IN PEACE GOODWILL’. The coin you will receive is from a limited mintage of 4,798, struck in 24.00 grams of .925 sterling silver. Offered in its original packaging from The Royal Mint with a certificate of authenticity.
