50th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain Silver Proof Commemorative Medallion

Fifty years ago the brave men of the Royal Air Force fought in their Hurricanes and Spitfires to match the might of the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain.  Between June and October 1940, a total of 4387 Royal Air Force, Fleet Air Arm and Allied aircrew took to the air to repel the enemy.

In conjunction wih the RAF Benevolent Fund’s “Reach for the Sky Appeal”, the Royal Mint has produced the Official Battle of Britain Commemorative Medallion.  Struck in Sterling (.925) silver, this beautiful medallion bears two superb designs by Mary Milner Dickens, which were selected after a limited competiton in which ten artists took part.

The obverse design shows three of the major aircraft that fought in the Battle of Britain, the Supermarine Spitfire and the Hawker Hurricane laid symbolically over a Messerschmitt BF109.

The reverse shows an air battle, with vapour trails and clouds forming a decorative patten.
