The 2016 William Shakespeare Two Pound Brilliant Uncirculated 3 Coin Set celebrates one of history’s greatest literary figures. This limited edition set, with only 22,060 issued, commemorates the legacy of William Shakespeare, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language.
Born in April 1564 in Elizabethan England, Shakespeare’s works were being performed on stage by 1592. His collection of plays, formally titled ‘Mr. William Shakespeare’s Comedies, Histories, & Tragedies’ (commonly known as the ‘First Folio’), continues to be cherished over 400 years after they were written.
This pre-owned UK coin set features three distinct £2 coins, each struck with a cupro-nickel centre and nickel-brass outer ring. Expert coin designer John Bergdahl has masterfully created three unique reverse designs representing themes from Shakespeare’s works:
- Comedy – featuring a joker’s hat and stick
- History – displaying a crown and sword
- Tragedy – showcasing a skull with a rose
Each coin features Jody Clark’s obverse portrait of Queen Elizabeth II – the fifth and final British coin effigy of Her Majesty. These coins are among the first to feature this final royal portrait.
Technical specifications for each £2 coin include:
- Weight: 12.00 grams
- Diameter: 28.40 millimetres
- Finish: Brilliant Uncirculated
The set comes housed in the original Royal Mint slipcase, featuring the Martin Droeshout portrait of Shakespeare on the packaging.
Not bad value for the missing coins in your collection.
