Coin Information:

Following the popularity of last year’s coins, Paddington Bear has returned for two more 50p coins in 2019. This is the first coin in the series, designed by David Knapton to show Paddington outside the Tower of London holding his favourite snack, a marmalade sandwich. The design is based on the modern CGI-live action movie, but fans of the films and books alike are sure to love this coin.

The 2019 Paddington at the Tower of London 50p coin is part of a series of Paddington Bear coins released by the Royal Mint in 2018 and 2019. The series features the beloved children’s character Paddington Bear, created by author Michael Bond, in various iconic British locations.

Key Features of the 2019 Paddington at the Tower of London 50p Coin:

  1. Design:

    • The reverse of the coin features Paddington Bear standing in front of the Tower of London, one of London’s most famous landmarks. The design shows Paddington in his iconic red hat and blue duffle coat, looking up at the Tower, which is depicted in the background.

    • The coin also features the inscription “PADDINGTON AT THE TOWER OF LONDON” around the edge, and the year 2019.

    • The design was created by Emma Noble, an artist known for her work on other British commemorative coins.

  2. Obverse Design:

    • The obverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark. This portrait of the Queen has been used on British coins since 2015 and shows her wearing the royal diadem, facing right.

  3. Metal Composition:

    • The coin is made of cupro-nickel, a metal alloy used for most UK circulating 50p coins. Cupro-nickel provides durability, making it suitable for regular circulation.

The Royal Mint produced this coin in a variety of different metals.
