2008 London Olympic Games of 1908 £2

The London Olympic Games 2008 £2 coin celebrates the centenary of the 1908 Olympics held in London. This commemorative piece features a running track design by Thomas T. Docherty with the anniversary date positioned within the track and “London Olympic Centenary” encircling the design. The edge inscription reads “THE 4TH OLYMPIAD LONDON,” completing this historic tribute.

About This Design

The first modern Olympic Games took place in Athens in 1896, envisioned by Baron Pierre de Coubertin to unite people worldwide in friendly athletic competition. London first hosted these prestigious games in 1908 at the purpose-built White City stadium. To honor this centenary, The Royal Mint issued this special £2 coin featuring imagery strongly associated with Olympic tradition.
